About Me
I use a unique variety of experiences and education in my approach to helping children and parents navigate emotions and overcome obstacles.
I earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1995 from WKU and specialized in Psychiatric Nursing for the next several years. I worked in the psychiatric hospital and home health setting. This is when I became familiar with a variety of mental illnesses, the symptoms and struggles of those, and the various treatments.
Later, in 2010, I graduated with a Master’s in Education in School Counseling PreK-12 from WKU. This is when I became educated in counseling, the therapeutic relationship, and theories that support change and growth.
I worked in the Sumner County elementary school setting for the next 7 years. I gained valuable, practical experience counseling kids with a variety of life issues, struggles, and behaviors. I became very familiar with students with ADHD, Anxiety, School Phobia, Neglect, Abuse, Divorce Adjustment, Loss, Incarcerated parents, and more. I helped them cope with these issues while managing stressors at school. I worked with many children to develop coping skills, social skills, calming strategies, and emotional regulation. I was the 504 Plan coordinator and have expertise in the Section 504 Plan process, as well as, when to seek an IEP for learning struggles.
Since 2017, I have worked with families independently and have learned more than ever, what practical strategies work in overcoming mental health challenges. Through these very personalized experiences and research, I have found the components and practical actions that help children learn to regulate their emotions and not be overwhelmed or held back by their big feelings.
